Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about the Troy Torpedoes? We have answers!

What ages are the swimmers on the Troy Torpedoes Competitive Swim Team?

You must be at least 5 years old and able to swim a full lap of the pool without assistance in order to be a Torpedo and swimmers up to 18 years of age can join and compete as a Troy Torpedo.

Who are the swim team's coaches?

Cassidy Smartt is our team's head coach. Marley Norris and Tori Hinson are the assistant coaches. They are a wonderful staff of coaches who love our kids and work hard to help each of them meet their potential in the pool and in life.

How often do the Torpedoes practice?

The Torpedoes are a year-round swim team so practice schedules change when school is out but during the school year, the Troy Torpedoes practice from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Many of our swimmers participate in other sports and so not all swimmers participate in every practice. Some swimmers who play other sports do not practice at all when another sports season is in session and some of our swimmers come to almost every practice. We are flexible as to attendance at practices as we realize that there are things in life other than swim.

Where do Torpedoes practice?

All practices are held at the Troy Rec Center in Troy, Alabama. During the warmer months, most practices are held at the outdoor pool. As the weather gets cooler, practices are moved to the indoor pool

Are lifeguards on duty during Torpedoes practices?

Absolutely. No swimmer is ever allowed in the pool without lifeguards in their chairs, on the deck.

Will the Troy Torpedoes coaches teach my child to swim?

No. These are not swim lessons. Torpedoes work on learning and perfecting the four competition swim strokes (freestyle, back stroke, breast stroke and butterfly) but your child should be a competent and confident swimmer before joining the Torpedoes. If your child is in need of swim lessons, we recommend the lessons offered by the Troy Rec Center.

How much does it cost to be a Troy Torpedo?

Every swimmer on the Troy Torpedoes must be a member of the Troy Rec Center and that membership fee is paid directly to the Troy Rec Center. There is a $40/month fee that is payable directly to the Troy Torpedoes Competitive Swim Team in order to participate in the Troy Torpedoes Competitive Swim Team.

Does my child have to compete in swim meets if they join the Torpedoes?

No. Most of our swimmers love to travel to swim meets in Alabama, Georgia and Florida but it is not required. Some Torpedoes do not participate in meets at all. Swimmers are required to pay a small entry fee for each meet in which they choose to participate.
